MISSION Severe Asthma: Modern Innovative SolutionS to Improve Outcomes iN Severe Asthma

MISSION is a Quality Improvement and Innovation project that will test the acceptability and delivery of a novel model of asthma care. The current journey for a patient with poorly controlled asthma in the community and hospital is convoluted and expensive requiring frequent use of out-of-hours (OOH) services that continues until a diagnosis of severe asthma is established by a specialist asthma Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), and appropriate treatments and support is initiated. This journey is associated with a particularly poor patient and carer experience.  The aim of MISSION-Severe Asthma is to proactively identify patients with poorly controlled asthma from GP registers, to facilitate swift assessment in the community followed by rapid specialist in hospital evaluation by a specialist asthma MDT, to dramatically reduce the length of time before severe asthma is recognised, and health costs are reduced and patient experience improved.
